There is a great number of attractions in Sydney. The most well-known ones are Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge, St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral, Royal Botanical Gardens, Luna Park, Australian Museum of Natural History and Anthropology, Museum of Contemporary Art and several others. One of the most beautiful things you can see in Australia is Uluru, also called Ayers Rock. It is an enormous rock alone in the middle of the desert south-west of Alice Springs. It is 3 kilometres long and 348 metres high, but there are another 2,100 metres under the ground. Uluru is 600 million years old, and for a long time, people thought that it was the largest rock of its kind in the world. Thousands of tourists come each year to walk around it and look at it. It is very popular with tourists, who come to visit the islands and beaches, swim in the clear warm water, and take boat rides to see the fish and the coral.
Coober Pedy, which is about 846 kilometres north-west of Adelaide, is a really extraordinary place. The beautiful blue-green stones called opals were first found here in 1915, and more than 90 per cent of the world’s opals come from here. But it is very hot and dry — 35 to 45 °C day after day in the summer. So most people live under the ground in houses which are dug out of the rock. Here they can stay cool, and if they want a bigger house, they just dig another room! Coober Pedy’s first tree was made of metal, and you can still see it on a hill outside the town. The Aboriginal name ‘Coober Pedy’ actually means ‘white man in a hole’.
Lakes are usually cool and wet — but not in Australia. The big lakes of the desert are dry most of the time. Enormous Lake Eyre, which is 210 kilometres long and 65 kilometres wide, was dry for a hundred years until 1950, and the lake is only full of water about once every eight years. But now there is a Lake Eyre Yacht Club. When it rains, people who belong to the yacht club go to the lake to sail — while they can! By the way, Lake Mungo in New South Wales has had no water for 16,000 years.
Another interesting place to visit is the Bungle Bungle Range in the Purnululu National Park in Western Australia. Here there are strange orange and black hills, made into round shapes by the wind and rain. There are also many interesting kinds of birds and animals here, and Aboriginal paintings.

Being a big continent Australia is rich in various attractions bright enough to meet any kind of visitors.
Perhaps the prime Australia attraction is the Great Barrier Reef – the unique magnificent formation of the smallest organisms living underwater known as corals. It is a favourite place for underwater discovers and desperate divers from all over the world. This exceptional ecosystem is one of the world’s heritage sites announced by local government as a marine park. The pearl of it is the Heart Reef which tremendous scenery can be best seen from above. Different islands offer active kinds of rest as well as luxury spa resorts, yacht and boat tours or just watching fantastic sunsets.
Sydney with its Opera House is considered to be an icon of the whole country. Shell-shaped Opera House is built on the verge of the peninsula stepping into the Harbor. This marvelous architectural spot and an art centre can also be observed from the Harbor Bridge. One more must-visit place in Sydney is Taronga Zoo which functions since the second decade of the 20th century and where you become acquainted with the Australian rarest and most unusual species.
Not far from Sydney you can share a piece of the ancient aboriginal legend. Dominating the Blue Mountains there stand three lonely rocks called the Three Sisters. As the legend says three lovely princesses were turned into rocks by a tribe shaman in order to protect them from being theft by the enemy tribe’s leaders who wanted to marry them. But the accident happened to the shaman – he got killed in the battle and could not undo the spell, thus the girls stayed in the shape of rocks forever. There are hiking and bike tracks leading to the mountains with amazing scenery and rare wildlife species on the way.

You can get glorious ocean view traveling along the Great Ocean Road, which extends in the state of Victoria along the southeastern coast for more than two thousand kilometers. Aside from picturesque ocean scenery with restless tidal waves and rummy cliffs you may also have a glimpse of the impressive stony lumps called the Twelve Apostles.

Сидней является крупнейшим и старейшим городом Австралии. Это было первое британское поселение. В Сиднее находятся старейшие в стране ботанические сады и зоопарк. Одной из главных достопримечательностей города является знаменитый мост через залив Порта Джексон. Другой является Оперный театр, который по форме напоминает большие белые раковины. Он окружен морем с трех сторон. Сидней – город трех университетов.
